Assistant Planning Director

About the Role:
As the Assistant Planning Director, you will play a critical role in guiding the Town's planning and development efforts. This includes assisting in the management of the Planning Department’s operations, overseeing long-range planning projects, coordinating growth management initiatives, and ensuring compliance with relevant federal, state, and local regulations. You will also support staff development, work collaboratively with stakeholders, and foster the implementation of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan, Land Management Ordinance, and building codes.

What You Wil Do
- Assist in strategic direction and compliance efforts within the department
- Ensure compliance of the Land Management Ordinance, Building Codes, Community Rating System and Flood Hazard Mitigation programs
- Supervise and mentor assigned staff, enhancing team effectiveness and performance
- Coordinate department activities with other Town departments and external agencies
- Meet and interact with citizens, city, state, and federal officials and other stakeholders regarding community development programs and activities
- Represent the Town on regional boards and in community meetings
- Support disaster recovery efforts

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Planning or related field, plus eight (8) years of related experience in senior management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid Driver’s License
- Extensive knowledge of planning, zoning, community development, and relevant regulations
- Proven leadership ability with experience in staff supervision and project management

What You Will Do

Inspector I:

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, is responsible for performing ongoing inspections of construction projects to ensure they are completed per approved plans, specifications, and approved shop drawing submittals.

Duties include but are not limited to:

1.Performs inspections and observations of projects for BJWSA to ensure projects are completed per approved plans, specifications, and approved shop drawings.
2.Inspects and ensures materials on-site for projects meet specifications and are installed, tested and accepted in accordance with BJWSA technical requirements.
3.Observes installation, work in progress, and testing to ensure work and documents observations in daily inspections reports, in accord with Department requirements. Inspection reports include general notes and photographs construction progress, documenting field conditions and measurements.
4.Informs engineers and contractors of observed deficiencies, recommends corrective measures and follows up to ensure compliance. Communicates effectively with supervisors and others within the Engineering Dept.
5.Reviews plans prior to pre-construction meetings and is responsible for on-going coordination in the field of to-do items review and discussed at the pre-construction meetings.
6.For approximately 6-weeks each year, will be a part of the in-office land development design review team responsible for issuing construction permits.
7.Assists senior staff as needed and performs other duties as required.

Inspector II:

SUMMARY: Under occasional supervision, is responsible for performing ongoing inspections of private-development projects to ensure they are completed per approved plans, specifications, and approved shop drawing submittals.

Duties include but are not limited to:

9.Reviews plans prior to pre-construction meetings and is responsible for on-going coordination in the field of to-do items review and discussed at the pre-construction meetings.
10.Recommends projects for service authorization by verification of close-out documents.
11.Performs warranty inspections.
12.For approximately 6-weeks each year, will be a part of the in-office land development design review team responsible for issuing construction permits.
13.Assist senior staff as needed and performs other duties as required.

Provides police escorts; directs traffic; and performs residential and commercial security checks.
Participates in a variety of in-service and special training programs.

Reports dangers of defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions.
May be assigned to collateral duty assignments such as school resource officer, investigations, etc.; works on assigned shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent; and no experience required but some law enforcement experience preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:
